How this Library of Strains is organized

It is not the intent of this library to be the definitive guide to the world's guppy strains. That would be impossible as it would create an endless and circular international debate on the definition of a strain and whether a particular guppy should be included or excluded in the library. For example, some people insist that a Black Moscow has to have a half-black allele to be "the real thing." Is the "Swallow Half-Black Metallic Magenta" a strain or an unfortunate combination of alleles?

Rather this collection of guppies and their pictures is intended to be useful to those who want to identify the genetic makeup of their guppies, to see what happens when specific alleles are combined, and to read about the history and characteristics of well-known strains as well as learn about the breeding and genetics of new or uncommon guppy phenotypes.

Over the next few years, we will attempt to provide the genetic makeup of every guppy in this library. This should make the library useful to breeders who want to know what will happen when they combine certain alleles. If you have a unique combination of alleles, please add your guppy to the library. Other breeders are sure to be interested in what you have accomplished. There is a credit section at the end of each entry. See Help:Editing for information on how to add guppies to the library.

Gene Symbols

This wiki uses a scientific gene notation convention for representing the genetic makeup (genotype) of guppies. See this article that interprets this convention: Gene Symbols.

Mutation Names

The names given to common mutations often differ from one region to the next. For a table of common mutations and their different names, click here: Mutationsnamen.

Library of Strains

Suggestion: when adding a page for a new strain, just copy an existing strain entry page (by clicking on the edit tab above the page and copying the source) and paste the source into your new page. Then edit the text.
